How a set is cut for your bed

Bedding is sold by the bed rather than by the sleeper, so the size on the label is the mattress it was drawn around and not the size of the piece itself.

The mattress is the starting point, not the finish line

Every size below is the mattress underneath. A set drawn for it comes out wider and longer, because the cover has to reach the mattress edge and then hang past it on three sides. That hang is the drop, and it is the whole reason the two numbers never match.

The finished measurement of any one set is printed on its own page, taken from the listing rather than from a rule of thumb. Hold that number against the row above and the difference is the drop you will get.

King and California King are not the same shape

This is the pair that catches people. A King is wider and a California King is longer, and swapping one for the other leaves either four inches of bare mattress down the side or four inches short at the foot. If the bed came with the house and nobody wrote it down, measure across before you order.

The dorm bed is the one we do not cover

A Twin XL is a Twin with five inches added to the length, and it is what most college rooms are fitted with. Nothing in this catalog is cut for one. A Twin quilt will sit five inches short at the foot of it, which is fine for a throw and wrong for a cover, so it is worth knowing before the box arrives.

When you are between sizes

Take the larger one. Extra drop reads as a made bed, while a short cover reads as a mistake from across the room.
Deep mattresses eat the drop. A pillow top or a topper can take three or four inches out of each side before the cover reaches the frame.
A Twin and a Full are the same length. If it is only the width in question, the length is already settled.
